Not fully rhymed though edited translated by © Fledermaus, Евгений Сухарников, Poetry Monster, 2021

The Russian original, by Agnia Barto, is perfectly rhymed though…

My brother (he outgrew me)
Brings everyone to tears.
He told me that Santa Claus
Is not what he appears!

He told me:
-Don’t believe in him! —
But then suddenly by itself
The door flings open

And I see
As an old man enters.
He’s got a beard,
He is dressed in a sheepskin coat,
The sheepskin coat to his very heels!
And then the old man says:
– So boys, where is the Christmas tree?
Are the kids in bed?

With a large silver bag
He stands, sprinkled with snow,
The old man wears a fluffy hat.
While my older brother keeps whispering:
– Look, he is just our neighbor!

Can’t you see: his nose is so similar!
And so are his hands and his back
I answer: – You fool, wait!
You, too, look like a granny,
But you’re not our grandma!

This poem is not merely about Santa Claus but about belief and faith. I am unsure whether the aged Agnia Barto, and she was seventy at the time when she wrote this poem, had intended to charge it with any deep meaning but she succeeded nonetheless. As it stands the poem is a philosophical rebuke to atheism.
