Alcaeus, also spelled Alkaios, (born c. 620 BC, Mytilene, Lesbos [Greece]—died c. 580 BC), Greek lyric poet whose work was highly esteemed in the Hellenistic world. He lived at the same time and in the same city as the poetess Sappho.
